A District's Journey to Computer Science for All
Friday June 20, 2025 10:05am - 11:20am PDT
Join us as we share Upland Unified School District's transformative journey from a "winter" of limited computer science access to an "autumn" of equitable, standards-based CS education. Inspired by the Seasons of CS framework, our team will discuss how our district has navigated the following stages:

Winter: A time of limited CS access in our district and a lack of focus on CS standards.
Spring: A period of growth and learning, as we began to explore computer science standards and resources.
Summer: Our current phase, where we're deepening our commitment to CS for All by integrating computer science into all curricular areas.
Autumn: Our vision for a future where computer science is embedded across all grade levels, fostering equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Discover how statewide initiatives have been instrumental in accelerating our progress towards this ambitious goal. We'll share practical strategies and insights to help you implement similar initiatives in your own district. We will also showcase our Technology Integration and Computer Science Jump Start Guide and our Educational Technology website that we have created and launched within our district, and how we are are using our Teachers on Special Assignment to support this implementation. We hope to see you there!

Implementing Computer Science on a Shoestring Budget
Friday June 20, 2025 10:05am - 11:20am PDT
In an era of constrained educational budgets, many districts struggle to provide comprehensive Computer Science (CS) education. However, Alta Loma School District has successfully designed, developed, and implemented a robust CS program without using district funds. By strategically partnering with the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools, Summer of CS, Cal-MSCS, as well as leveraging grants, free professional development, and accessible resources the team wa sable to overcome significant financial barriers.

Alta Loma School District leaders will present how they reimagined master schedules, maximized staff, and implemented innovative strategies to create a thriving, self-sustaining CS pathway for students in grades 6 through 8, while also offering enrichment opportunities at the elementary level. Despite being one of the lowest-funded districts in San Bernardino County, the district has made CS education a priority and reality for its students, preparing them for a technology-driven future.

This session will share actionable insights, master schedule design, lessons learned, and replicable strategies, empowering other districts to implement impactful CS programs, even on a "shoestring" budget.

Education Innovation & Research (EIR): Computational Thinking in Math & Science
Friday June 20, 2025 12:20pm - 1:35pm PDT
Over the past three years, OCDE has collaborated on a federal EIR grant to embed computational thinking (CT) practices into core mathematics and science courses. This initiative aims to strengthen students’ STEM and CS identities while laying a foundation for future computer science study.

Working closely with educators, we have introduced a taxonomy of CT practices tailored to math and science, supporting them in designing units that naturally integrate these practices. A key focus has been making students aware of their engagement in CT, reinforcing its relevance to their learning. These practices not only align with core content but also serve as stepping stones to deeper CS exploration.

In this session, participants will engage with the CT taxonomy, identify natural connections within their subjects, and explore strategies for meaningful integration

From Vision to Action: Designing your District's CS Integration Plan
Friday June 20, 2025 12:20pm - 1:35pm PDT
Today’s educators have a multitude of curricular challenges, so integrating Computer Science into the classroom seems arduous. However, in today’s modern world, computer science is a necessary part of K-12 core curriculum. Like other district-wide initiatives though, it requires strategy and support to be successful and sustainable. With the right strategies, coaching, and dynamic tools, however, it IS possible and your students will love it! This presentation showcases our district practices to help prepare educational leaders, instructional coaches, and support staff with the strategies and tools (systems of support, opportunities of standards integration, understanding of edtech vs CS, AI integration) to make a district’s computer science initiative a success. Explore the many ways we have integrated CS into the curriculum fostering critical-thinking and problem-solving.  For example, learn how students use computer science to address the U.N.’s Global Goals. See how CS is integrated in not just math and science, but also in history and language arts lessons.  Even if you have no computer science experience, come learn with us and see how you could make it happen in your district!
